What is the MISA? What are your organization's goals? | Top

MISA stands for Management Information Systems Association, an organization geared toward the majors of COBAE, but more specifically I.S.. Our goals are to provide knowledge on what Information Systems really is, to break the stereotype that it's about computers and electronics, and to provide real life experience and field knowledge.

How do people become members? | Top

Sign up online, it's fast and easy.

What criteria is there for membership? | Top

The criteria, aside from genuine interest, is basically attendance to each Wednesday meeting, participation, a 2.0 GPA, and 16 dollars per semester.

What are the benefits of joining? | Top

Networking is the easiest benefit. Free food at every weekly meeting, tutoring resources, book exchanges, an awesome website.

M.I.S.A. members are exposed to professionals and occasionally recruiters that tell us how they think and what they expect. Simply put, being a member gets your resume in front of every speaker. We also co-host department events that usually push members forward toward internships and opportunities.

Does MISA accept donations? How does MISA use donations? | Top

We gladly accept donations, and sincerely appreciate them. We use your donation to support student-business interaction. Tutoring services, advicocy by way of 'Let's do I.T.', and the maintenance of student support networks (such as this website) all take time and money. We use donations to fund events and services that go directly towards students education and well being.

What opportunities are available to your members? | Top

MISA leadership positions are most definitely available. Apart from internal leadership positions, you'll have the chance to market yourself, and network, with companies every week.

When you graduate will you have a job quick? | Top

Being in M.I.S.A doesn't guarantee you a job. Trust us, hard work pays off!

How much is the average starting salary? | Top

This varies by location, and company. For a realistic view of salaries see the US Labor Departments outlook for Information Systems. Glassdoor.com also has a comprehensive view of salaries and positions in I.S.

Do most I.S. majors work from home? | Top

Most? No. Depends on the particular field, because I.S. is just a category. 1/3 work in the field, and travel. 1/5 work from home, 1/3 have a physical office, and the rest, well, any combination of the above.

Are the classes usually loaded with students? | Top

Yes! But as one gets to the core classes, there are less students, all depending on the specialty and elective.

Are there teachers to really get to know their students? | Top

Yes, definitely. We have an excellent student to department professor ratio. And the professors are really approachable, and friendly.

What advantages does I.S. have over other majors? | Top

We are the jack of all trades. In general... we know a lot about business, and a lot about technical functions. I.S. is the business side of technology. Knowing how marketing, operations management, statistics, etc., is paired with I.S. is what we focus on. The business functions of I.S. jobs can never be outsourced, or done away with.

What contacts does MISA have in the business world? | Top

We have a close association with ISACA (Information Systems Audit and Control Association). ISACA has connections to over 70+ firms from around Los Angeles. We are a chapter of this association, so you get the same benefits a Fraternity or Sorority does with their alumni and connections. Of course, we also have contacts with each company who speaks at our weekly meetings.

When do you meet? | Top
